Elmer Jensen celebrated a milestone of 100 years with his wife Leona, just a mere 99 years young at his side at the Standard Community Hall on October 11 with over 235 family and friends in attendance.
The couple will be celebrating their 74 wedding anniversary at the end of October.
Jensen farmed in the Standard area since 1940 originally as a crop farmer but then introduced Black Angus Cattle in ’45. The farm is still in operation today and is now known as Crowfoot Cattle still being run by sons Jackie and Dallas Jensen and grandson Chris Jensen living on the home quarter.
In 2010 the farm celebrated it’s 100th anniversary as well. Both Elmer and Leona have been active members in the community of Standard as well as active members of the Lutheran Church. Elmer served as Mayor of Standard for 13 years and served in various capacities on School Board, and Church council and is a Past President of the local Lions Club. Leona kept herself busy feeding farm hands and family and especially took to helping out making quilts. Making quilts for family and more importantly making quilts for Canadian Lutheran World Relief and On Eagles Wings (both church affiliated groups).
“I’m not sure I deserve all this and the wonderful things that people are saying about me but I sure do appreciate all of you and appreciated that you came out to celebrate with us” said Jensen at his celebration. He had greetings brought to him on behalf of the provincial and federal governments, both Alan Larsen, Mayor of Standard and Michael Ell, Mayor of Strathmore recognized him for his contributions to both communities. He even received birthday wishes from Queen Elizabeth, monarch of Canada.
The family finished their day of celebration with an intimate meal with all the family that came.
