Strathmore High School (SHS) held their last assembly of the school year on May 28. Students and organizations within the school were recognized for a number of different achievements, including Jason Wilson, Scott Thurston, Aiden Anderson and Jesse Luehr, the curling team who went on to provincials earlier this year. The boys brought a never-before-seen banner to adorn the school gymnasium.
“There is a lot of banners that hang in our gymnasium here, this is one that we have never put up,” said Associate Principal Kyle Larson.
“These guys competed at this year’s curling provincial championships and anybody who’s watched curling or has been around curling, it’s a pretty tough to pick a team that is the most sportsman-like because generally everybody is in curling, it’s a pretty gentleman’s game and this year at the provincial championship our team was nominated, and won, this year’s sportsmanship banner.”
The boys were the first team in 14 years to win zones, and though they didn’t win provincials they did get to bring home a new banner for the school, which in itself is an achievement.
“It’s good to know people look for that still, it’s good to know people still look for the kindness in people,” said Wilson.
“It’s pretty nice to be the first team to get a sportsmanship award in the school,” said Luehr.
Thurston and Anderson both also agreed that it felt pretty good, and was kind of cool to be part of the team that brought the sportsmanship banner to SHS.
