Strathmore’s Tyson Zarowny has been playing baseball for nine years, idolizing Shane Victorino of the Boston Red Sox. This year, Zarowny and the Prairie Baseball Academy took home the CCBC National Championship. It was Zarowny’s first time on the college team, who have now been CCBC Champions three seasons in a row. They produced 39 wins this year, a school record.
Zarowny played on the Strathmore AAA Reds until the beginning of his last year of high school, when Reds’ Coach Zane Anderson made a suggestion to the outfielder.
“He coached me for two years, like in Grade 10 and 11, and he helped me go to Vauxhall,” Zarowny said.
In Grade 12 at Vauxhall Academy, Coach Les McTavish assisted him with the new transition and to improve his game—which he did.
This past season, Zarowny held a batting average of .324, scored 17 runs, had 21 RBI, and didn’t have a single error. He also used his great speed to his advantage, stealing nine bases. He hopes to win the CCBC Championship again next year.
Zarowny has one more year to go at PBA in Lethbridge, where he’s studying for a diploma in political science. After that, he’d like to complete a four-year program, but isn’t sure where just yet.
“I enjoy playing it all the time,” he said. “It’s just fun.”
This summer, Zarowny will be playing for the Lethbridge Bulls in the Western Major Baseball League.
