For the past few years schools in Strathmore have been participating in a Sobeys Gift Card fundraiser. Families can sign up for a predetermined amount of groceries a month, paying the school directly for the cards and then Sobeys gives the schools a 10 per cent discount. Groceries are something that every single household needs to buy, therefore making the fundraiser an easy success.
On Nov. 28 Wheatland Elementary School held their monthly assembly where they announced whether or not they, as a school, had made the goal of raising $7,500.
“We were able to exceed this goal by raising just over $9,000.This money will go towards a variety of extracurricular activities and equipment at the school (field trips, musical instruments, technology, gym equipment, reading incentives),” said Michelle Rushford, associate principal at Wheatland Elementary school.
Brady Johansen and Spencer Johansen were the top sellers in division one, tying at $5,800 raised each for a total of $11,600. Emma Van Bussel brought in $2,150 and was the division two top seller.
By reaching, and exceeding their goal, the entire school body will now get to take part in a Minion Movie Day on Jan. 24. All of the students will dress up like minions from Despicable Me. Staff will also dress up and everyone will watch Despicable Me 2 together.
