With three representatives (and a relay team) from SHS, and one athlete from Holy Cross Collegiate, the students did Strathmore proud during Track and Field Provincials at Foothills Park in Calgary on June 7-8.
The Intermediate Girls Relay team from Strathmore High, made up of Cassandra Fisk, Carter Jones, Jade Ballance, and Jessica Murphy, finished in seventh place, with the latter also finishing 11th in the province in high jump. Karly Larson finished 14th for the same event in her division, junior girls.
Spartan Kyle Foster was one spot off from bronze, finishing fourth in Alberta, in the Junior Boys 400 m Dash.
Holy Cross’ lone competitor, Christopher O’Leary also finished fourth, but in Junior Boys Discus.
As for junior high, Holy Cross hosted Wheatland County finals on June 4, and Zones in Calgary on June 5.
“Competing two meets in two days is very challenging,” said John Reinhart of Holy Cross Collegiate. “The students did a very good job under difficult circumstances.”
The meets were exceptionally challenging for those taking on more than one event: Darcie Weir finished second in long jump, third in relay, sixth in 100 m dash, and fifth in 200 m. Similarly, Madison Tiffin finished third in long jump, third in relay, and fifth in 100 m.
In more endurance-style events, Martina Vergouwen dominated, taking seventh in 3000 m and sixth in 800 m. She finished third in relay as well.
On the boys side, standout Chris Rebeyka earned fourth place in hurdles and 400 m, and seventh in discus.
