Hayze and Destiny Stevens both did Strathmore proud this past weekend – but instead of team roping together, each competed in different rodeos: Hayze went to the Super Six Team Roping in Olds from August 10 to 11, while Destiny went to the August 11 Junior Rodeo in Claresholm.
“I did pretty good,” said 14-year-old Hayze. He placed fourth in the eight incentive, winning $300 and a saddle pad, beside partner Mike Longeway.
“He just asked me to rope, so I said I’ll rope with you, and that was our first time,” he said.
It was Stevens’ first rodeo in Olds, competing amongst over 1000 teams of all ages.
“There were a couple guys that were around 85, and then there were 10-year-olds,” Hayze said.
Destiny, on the other hand, faced riders in her age group, and dominated.
“She had a really, really good weekend,” her brother said, as Destiny finished second in barrels, and took home first in goat tying, and team roping with Quinn Leslie.
“I was just more competitive,” Destiny said. “It didn’t really pay that much but I got prizes too.”
The pair are looking forward to coming back to together for the Strathmore Super Series Youth Rodeo on August 17 and 18. Last year, a total of $7147 was paid out in prize money, with an average winning of $86 for riders. Hayze previously placed in all his events the first day, and won breakaway, but didn’t do so well on the second. He has high hopes for this year.
“You feel at home, you know the place, you’ve been there. It’s more relaxed,” he said.
“It’s more comfortable,” Destiny added.
