Strathmore football – at the peewee, bantam, and senior level – recognized their best on Nov. 22 at the Civic Centre for their annual Football Awards Night. Best defensive and offensive linesman and backs were named, along with most improved and top rookies in all three categories.
“It ties off the end of the year, for players and coaches,” said Carl Seafoot, coach of the Strathmore High Spartans’ football team. “Not everybody gets awards, but everybody participated.”
Two who took home many awards were Travis Luehr and Kyle Neufeld, stars of the senior team. Leuhr won senior offensive lineman, senior MVP and was named a league all-star.
“He played well for us all through the year, he played both offensive line and some defensive line for us,” Seafoot said. “He’s been a mainstay on the team for the past two years at least; even in his rookie season he was showing some good qualities at that point in time.”
Neufeld, who played linebacker and running back for Seafoot, was named best senior defensive back, and as also a league all-star.
“Another guy, both are very good team players. Healthy bodies for the team,” Seafoot said.
Both Leuhr and Neufeld received Spartan Award recognition with other teammates, an award for leadership, proficiency, attitude, and dedication.
“It gets more into their team leadership and just their dedication to the team itself,” Seafoot said. “They’re the guys you could always count on being there, they’re always staying on the positive side, which is hard to do with some of our scores. It’s really critical to have those types of guys around.”
Other winners included Angelina and Zach Palardy as peewee defensive line and offensive line champions, and Kobe Holloway as offensive valuable player for the bantams – Holloway was also a league all star with Reid Jensen (best peewee rookie), Nathan Cayouette (peewee MVP) and bantam Mihaly Varga (a Spartan Award winner).
