Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford announced at the Sept. 4 regular town council meeting a new incentive program for new homebuyers in Strathmore. Anyone purchasing a new house in the town will be given a free one-year family swimming pass for public and family swimming. They will also be given a free pass for family and public skating for one year, and a free family library membership for a year. Stanford said the program ends in April so anyone wanting to be a part of the program must purchase before then. The program and its success rates will be brought back before council in April to discuss the possibility of extending it. Realtors will need to show signed agreement of a new home purchase, and then the town will provide them with the pass to deliver to the buyer.
55 Games appointments
Earlier this year Strathmore won the bid to host the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games in 2015. A 16-person board is needed to plan, coordinate and implement the games. At the Aug. 4 council meeting, council approved the terms of reference for the board of directors. Upon accepting the terms of reference, council also appointed Donalda Ledene as the chair of the Alberta 55 Plus Games Board of Directors. Ledene was an integral part of the successful bid process to bring the games to Strathmore. She is a retired teacher and active Lions Club member. She has also attended the 55 Plus Games numerous times with her husband.
Library day and appointments
Council accepted a request from the Strathmore Municipal Library board to proclaim Oct. 5 as Strathmore Municipal Library Day. The board’s request came because they would like to promote the services and the benefits the library has for its patrons.
The library board of trustees has two new faces sitting at the meetings. Council accepted Vanessa Vetterl and Randy Service as new trustees for a one-year term.
Well site setback
Council gave support to WestCreek Development to initiate a request with the Energy Resources Conservation Board regarding a well site. There is an existing well site where the developer hopes to build, and they would like to see the setback requirement relaxed from 100 metres to 50 metres. Development Officer Harry Salm said council is not granting the relaxation but instead they are supporting the request that goes to the ERCB.
“I have absolutely no problem with the relaxation of the setback on this,” said Councillor John Rempel.
The well is located in Lot 1; Block A, Plan 941 0061, which is within NE 15-24-25 W4M.
