Darcee Hall, 12, took a break from her Strathmore Reds uniform and suited up in a Team Alberta one. From August 9 to 11, she and girls from all over the province came together in Medicine Hat for the Western Canada Peewee Championship. The team of 12 and 13-year-olds didn’t know each other for more than a few days time, but gelled very well on the diamond. Alberta took home silver, losing to British Columbia in the final on Sunday, 13-3.
“We had two days of training and three days of games,” Hall said. “It was very fun, and I learned a lot. A lot of new skills with my pitching and batting.”
Alberta struggled against British Columbia the entire weekend, losing to them as well on Friday night. Saturday against Manitoba and the Okanagan Halos, the girls pulled off wins, earning them second place in the round robin.
In the second inning of the final, Alberta’s pitcher was struck by a line drive; Hall said this was the point of her team’s downfall.
“It was a tie game after the first, and then they kind of pulled ahead,” she said.
Now with the season done, the second basewoman focuses her time on hockey, volleyball, basketball, dance and 4-H, until next spring.
“I just thought it was really cool to meet other girls who had the same amount of passion for sport as I did,” she said.
