Five years ago, after a previous hockey school folded, Doug Raycroft recognized the town’s need and created the Elite Hockey Development Camps.
Now available for the entire month of August, are two programs: one for novice to peewee, and one for bantam to midget.
“We have the kids coming out from different age groups, and it’s developmental, so we’re teaching them and instructing them, but it’s also kind of a conditioning. It’s high tempo stuff, to get them ready for the season,” Raycroft said.
Raycroft played junior hockey himself, and received a college scholarship to the United States. Afterwards, he coached junior, and has been helping with different hockey schools for over 20 years.
Anyone is able to join, with roughly 25 spots in each program.
“We’ll take anyone that wants to. It’s not really a learn-to-skate program, in the older group there’s a lot of really good players,” Raycroft said. “We have quite a few that went onto the AA teams. Now they’re starting to go into midget and stuff and some have made junior hockey. So we have a lot of success stories.”
There is more to come, according to Raycroft. He’s confident some of his students will end up with college scholarships, just like he did.
