Because I am a Girl

Sonny Warrack
SMRA Fundraising Coordinator

Because I am a Girl is an organization based on closing the gap on gender equality in developing countries. The right to education, medicine and proper nourishment must be equal whether male or female. The girl is the cornerstone to positive change, changes that end the vicious circle of poverty, safer communities, the end of child marriage, higher literacy rates among youth.
This kind of change can lead whole countries out of poverty. After all a country is only as good as its people. Because I am a Girl has their sights set on this very goal and the Strathmore Minor Ringette Association (SMRA) is very proud to be involved in this very proactive initiative.
“While SMRA is a minor sports organization first and foremost, our board felt that because we are almost entirely a female sport, that we could be a shining example to the world of what girl power can accomplish when given equal opportunity,” says Sonny Warrack. ‘Because I am a Girl’ is a natural alliance for SMRA and it’s players, the players and members are excited to be apart of such an inspiring cause.
Congratulations to Emily McComber from U14 for her winning design in the token contest. Her artwork was chosen for the token that will be sold throughout the season. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to the ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign. The original artwork for the token was auctioned off for $500 before the All Star game on Friday, Oct.11.The ringette teams will be having fun selling the tokens through out the season. The tokens sell for $2 and will all be proudly displayed upstairs in the Strathmore twin arenas.
“We hope to have several thousand on display by the end of the year and we encourage all our members and all people interested to check out our facebook page as well as our website www.strathmoreringette.ca to see how they can contribute. All positive comments will only help the great momentum which we anticipate our teams will generate to ‘Because I am a girl’,” comments Warrack. On October 10 SMRA held a fundraising Jelly Bean Dance and on Fri. Oct.11 SMRA declared it the ‘Day of the Girl’ and to celebrate held a free All Star game between the University of Calgary and Calgary’s U19AA teams. The turnout was incredible and they are well on their way to reaching their set goal of $5,000 for the year.
