The Strathmore Venom novice lacrosse team is off to a successful start to the new campaign.
After an $-$ win on May 14 at the Strathmore Family Centre, the Venom improved to 2-1 on the season, impressing head coach Stacy Gallant in the process.
“You know what it is? It’s just the kids are putting in an effort,” said Gallant. “That’s all we ask. Personally, I don’t care whether we win or lose – I’m just here to develop their skill a little better.
“They have to buy into the big philosophy that the more effort you give, the more goals you’ll score.
“We just want them to try hard every practice, every game.”
According to Gallant, the Venom have been playing a great transition game early this year. He believes that is something that will help the team as they move on to the different levels of the sport.
The Strathmore Lacrosse Association is developing their players with the same blueprint, which makes the system easier to grasp.
With such a short season to digest the sport, Gallant plans to focus on passing and catching the ball and of course, having fun in the process.
“By the end of they year, I would like to see us focus a little more on teamwork,” said the coach. “My goal, in my mind, is to allow them to be able to move on to the next level – to peewee for the ones moving up and have them not look out of place.
“I work really hard on making sure our practices are structured and that they’re learning things out there that they’re going to carry on throughout the season and their career.”
