Town protects wetlands from possible east/west connector road

The Town of Strathmore has been reviewing its long-term infrastructure plan, which brought forth a need to review possible east/west connector roads. One of the potential alignments could cut through the wetlands.
Jesse Parker, Director of Engineering and Operations for the Town, said there currently aren’t any plans for a road through the wetlands. He said it would be development that will drive the necessity of an east/west road. Administration is trying to think about the potential of future development in the area. By making it a policy then the Town could say to a developer they would prefer the structure placed elsewhere, because there is the potential for the road. Administration doesn’t know what the actual studies are going to be. That’s why they would like to have it as basically a policy. The recommendation from administration is that there is no future development to ensure there are no barriers for the possible alignment. The only exemptions are: existing works by the developer of WestCreek for the expansion of the Public Utility, Municipal and Environmental Reserve on the east side of highway 817. Improvements, made by the Town to Pond 1 and the pathway system in the area, and the WID’s improvements to their works in the area.
Councillor Bob Sobol made a motion to accept the policy to protect the area so the town can conduct future studies as to whether it is a suitable area for an east/west connector road. Councillor Earl Best was the only one opposed to the motion.
Letter of support for Japan
Councillor Bob Sobol discussed Japan and the fact they are in need of assistance. Sobol said he encourages Strathmore residents to consider supporting Japan in their time of need. He said he also cautions people to make sure the relief fund they decide to use is well established and legitimate. Strathmore has been working with Japan since 2004 for their student exchange programs. Sobol made a recommendation for the Mayor to sign a letter of support on behalf of council and the residents of Strathmore expressing sorrow for them during the time of crisis and reassuring them our thoughts and prayers are with them. The motion was passed.
