Councillor Bob Sobol brought forward a motion to implement recognition to outstanding citizens at council on March 2.
“It seems to me that town council to no fault of their own, tends to focus on many of the negative issues or problems far too often,” said Sobol.
He said it occurred to him there is a lot to be thankful for in the town and a lot of great people who contribute to making the town a wonderful place to live.
“I’d like to propose that we begin a tradition of paying tribute to people or groups that council feel are instrumental in improving Strathmore in a significant manner,” said Sobol.
One member of council, on a rotational basis, will nominate a person or group they think have made significant efforts for improving the town at the first meeting of each month. A letter will be sent out on behalf of the mayor and council informing the resident or group. Council unanimously accepted the motion. Sobol then proceeded to nominate the Strathmore Fire Department as the first recipients of Citizen of the Month. He said the fire department has been instrumental in making the ice at Kinsmen Park an area where residents can enjoy spending time.
Centennial Committee
Since the auction of the first centennial pins, Sobol said some people have expressed disappointment about not being able to bid and, he assumes, have an opportunity to help support the committee. They have set up a sponsorship opportunity program, which will allow anyone wishing to financially support the centennial projects to do so. Kennel assistant
Council approved a part time kennel assistant in the 2011 budget
Amendments. The person receiving the position is already a volunteer at the kennel and administration would like to pay her. Council approved the motion.
Council serving drinks
Town council and administration will be at the Strathmore Station on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 pouring drinks, serving wings and raising their glasses to another 100 years. The proceeds will be donated to the centennial committee to help with upcoming projects this year.
Advertising RFP
Council had requested that administration to establish a fair and equitable procedure to single-source all municipal advertising to one newspaper. The goal is to improve advertising cost effectiveness and provide a consistent communication vehicle for advertising municipal events and legally required notices to Strathmore residents. The Strathmore Times was awarded the tender.
