The U19 B Belle Provincial ringette Championships took place in Fort McMurray this past weekend. Strathmore and Rockyford both sent teams to take part in the championships. Darin Dunlop, coach for the Strathmore Ice, has been coaching ringette for more than 10 years.
He said the weekend didn’t quite go as they had hoped. The team was three goals away from being three wins and no losses, but ended up 0-3.
“We lost every game with a single goal that was scored in the last four or five minutes,” said Dunlop.
“It was very, very evenly matched. There was one 7-2 game, and every other game was decided by one goal, between all of the teams, not just us.”
The Rockyford Ringers didn’t do as well as they had hoped either. In the round robin, they won one, lost one and tied one, which gave them a chance to play a mini-game. The mini-game lasted for 10 minutes, and was to determine which team would continue on to a medal placing game, which unfortunately they lost.
Dunlop said his team was as prepared as they could be to take part in the championships, and they had a great season.
“At the start of the year we lost our goalie to AA in Calgary and at the last minute we picked up a goalie that hadn’t played for awhile,” said Dunlop.
“But we got together and got a team together and that’s what counted. Everyone gelled and we gelled at the right time. We just didn’t get the ring bounces in Fort Mac.”
He said every year of coaching is different, and this was as good as any. He said they were a great group of girls, who got along well and played together well as a team.
