Community members were sparked into greater involvement in the Gleichen and District Fire Association at its annual general meeting March 22, following the recent lockout and re-opening of their Fire Department by the County of Wheatland.
Deputy Chief Mike Burne, who chaired the meeting, began by  explaining some of the recent happenings.
To clear the air, he said neither the Secretary, the Treasurer, or the financial situation of the Association was ever questioned by the County. Rather the Fire Department (and Association) had a list of some very minor things to complete before they reopened.
One of the compliances required by the County was to have the AGM and elect a new executive for the coming year.
Due to the higher number of people who came out to the meeting, the present Association held nominations from the floor in accepting new members before electing a new executive.
The new executive for the 2011-2012 calendar year includes: Ron McCanna as President. After three consecutive voting ties it was decided to have two Vice-Presidents with Mike Burne and Dariusz Jedynak sharing the position. The two other members of the executive,  Secretary Linda Burke and Treasurer Tammy Fraser were re-elected to their positions.
Three new Directors were added that night from the floor, Ian Bagwell, Ian Mast and Connie Webb, all of whom joined the association that night.
Two Auditors were also elected from within the Association for the 2010 year-end, Officer Jerry Heine and Dispatcher Barb Clarke.
Fire Chief Richard Clarke thanked everyone for coming out and supporting the association and was looking forward to a great year.
