Volleyball players from Standard School were in Bassano on Nov. 25 to take part in their zone playoffs. The girls had won the zone finals for their division for the eighth year in a row. They were hoping to pull off their eighth straight provincial championship. Unfortunately they weren’t quite able to pull it off, but were still able to walk away with the bronze medal.
“To have medaled eight years in a row….I’m extremely proud of this bunch of girls. They maybe didn’t have the big guns that maybe we had in years past, where there were a couple of topnotch players, and you know, it was a matter of really fighting through and working as a team,” said coach Susan Moncks.
“We did very well in the tournament and we ended up in a three-way tie for first place in our pool. We ended up coming third in that division, then we played off in a quarter final. We won in the quarter final.”
They went into the semi final, where they played the girls from St. Mary’s from Taber, who beat them.
“They probably went into playing one of the toughest matches they had to play because, of course, when we lost the semifinal there was extreme disappointment from some of them, as we had beaten that team in the round robin,” said Moncks.
“But the St. Mary’s Taber girls played very hard and definitely earned the win against us, and then it was very nice to see them win the tournament.”
Five of the girls from this year’s team will be returning next year and Moncks is confident they will have another great season.
“We got a nice strong bunch of junior high kids, we’ve got quite a few junior high kids very interested in volleyball and excited to follow suit I think.”
