Spartan girls basketball season comes to an end

Dion Galandy – Head Coach

After winning in Olds 77 to 63 March 10, the Lady Spartans played Brooks in Brooks on March 11.

The game started off slow for the Spartans where they fell behind by almost 20 points in the second quarter but managed a small rally before the end of the second only down 13 points.

Strathmore continued with the momentum and by the middle of the fourth quarter, had tied the game and taken a two-point lead.

However, in the last three minutes Brooks made all of their shots and beat Strathmore 65-75.

The Spartans worked hard, but just could not manage baskets when they needed them. Because of the loss, the Spartans matched up with Holy Trinity on March 12.

It was a tough game for the Spartans, not because of their opponent, but because the game was missing some much needed energy. Strathmore took a 20-point lead, but Holy Trinity managed to score 49 points to Strathmore’s 56 points.

With the win, Strathmore would face High River on March 13.

High River was out for revenge after losing the league championship a week earlier.

High River played a spirited game where Strathmore looked tired. By the end of the game, High River beat Strathmore 62-80. After the loss, the Spartans quest for the second provincial birth ended.

Despite the disappointing loss to end the season, the Spartans can feel proud of their accomplishments this year.

They finished the year with a record of 18 wins and 12 losses and captured the Foothills League Championship.

With eight returning players next year, they look to continue building on the confidence established this year.

Congratulations on a great year.
