November 6 saw the PeeWee and Senior Spartans football teams competing for a chance to make it to the provincial semi-finals. Both teams played their championship games and for the PeeWee team it was in Stettler. This is only the second year the PeeWee team has been in existence. They are already showing great improvement and determination and will be competing in the semi-finals on Nov. 13 after beating Stettler 27-24. It was a tough battle, but late in the fourth quarter the team pulled ahead to win the game.
“They were pumped up. They showed a lot of character in this game. They were losing 18-0 in the first quarter and they managed to not let the lead get their spirits down,” said coach Doug Klauck.
In the beginning, when Stettler quickly pulled ahead, Klauck said the team seemed to get a little down, but then they managed to pull themselves together and play the best game they could.
“They just didn’t quit, they didn’t get down on themselves when they were losing, and they just fought their way back into it and it was a really good character building sort of thing for the team,” said Klauck.
“We made some minor adjustments, but it was the kids, they just didn’t quit.”
None of the players are out for any injuries, and any who had been are back on the field just in time to take part in the semi-finals.
The semi-final game takes place here in Strathmore on Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. If the boys win the semi-finals, they will head off to the finals in Lloydminster on Nov. 20. Currently the team is at 5-3-0.
Senior Spartans fall
The Senior Spartans were in Olds on Nov. 6, fighting for their spot in the Tier 3 championship. It was a good game, but there were a few miscues which cost the team big, said coach Carl Seafoot.
The game was at 21-6 for Olds at half time. Going into the fourth quarter the boys caught up a bit, bringing the score to 21-13.
“On a positive roll, we had our chances, but didn’t capitalize when we needed to… they put up 14 points late in the fourth… a couple of injuries took some key people off the field late in the game,” said Seafoot.
Denver Roy scored a touchdown on a pass from Tyler Mulcahy, and there was a fumble return for a major by Chris Reed. The game ended with a score of 35-13 for Olds. Olds picked Reed as the Most Valuable Player, for Strathmore.
