The Crowther Memorial Junior High School hockey program held the second annual Hockey for Hunger as a winter wrap-up party Dec. 2 at the Strathmore Family Centre and turned it into a food drive for the Strathmore Wheatland County Christmas Hamper.
Crowther Memorial Junior High School Grade 7 students, Brentwood Grade 6 students and the Westmount hockey program were all invited to take part in the event.
“It’s very important to hold events like these with the economic times we are in,” said hockey program coach Rod Neaves. “This is just one way to bring awareness to the issue.”
Students crammed into the Family Centre, holding signs as their classmates played an exhibition game on the ice. It would have been the largest crowd for any Bisons or Kings game this year.
“The people need the food and it’s easy for kids to bring something with them to the arena,” said CMJHS teacher and event organizer Anne Paskevich.
Athletes and students were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to the arena, or to the junior high.
Paskevich tallied 627 donations from the Hockey for Hunger event. There are more opportunities to drop off food donations at the school on Dec. 9, 12 and 14 at CMJHS.
