Generating creative capital through giving

The Strathmore and Wheatland County Christmas Hamper Society are once again providing Christmas joy for families in the area.
With many people unemployed, the society is expecting an increased number of families in need. Their target is to have at least as many hampers as last year.
Boxes are placed around town for food and new toy donations, and donations should be in before Dec. 19.
“With only two weeks before distribution days, our tables are empty. We realize that it is a difficult and expensive time of year for everyone, but please, give a little thought to those less fortunate,” said Jean Buthfer, Secretary for the Christmas Hamper Society. “It may be that a parent has lost their job, been laid off, or had some major expense that they weren’t prepared for … and now money is tight and nothing is left over for Christmas dinner, or toys for the children. We live in a very giving community, which includes the Town of Strathmore and Wheatland County. The businesses and service clubs have never let us down.”
Buthfer said that those in need could apply for a hamper by calling 403-934-2466. Organizers will take some information and base qualification on income and outlay guidelines. All information is kept confidential. Buthfer said those in need should have no reservations about applying.
Many studies indicate that individuals and organizations that contribute to their residents needs, especially in poor economic times, create a greater quality of life quotient for their living area and that creative capital becomes an economic driver for the community, by attracting and keeping people and resources in the area. In turn, people who once required help are more inclined to pay it forward when they reach more stable economic times.
Donating to others can also be a good teaching opportunity for families, to relay to their children the importance and goodwill generated by giving. At a time of ‘I want,’ giving to others can add important meaning to holiday traditions.
The society takes cash donations as well, but contributions can also be made in the form of volunteer time, for those who don’t have the cash to give.
Buthfer said packing the hampers often takes up to three hours and help is appreciated. Those who would like to volunteer can call 403-934-9090.
