Hockey Alberta announced their roster for their provincial teams and a pair of Strathmore products made the grade.
Jane Jacobs was named to the U18 female team that will compete at the National Women’s U18 championship, and CFR Chemical Bisons forward Peyton Krebs was selected to compete in the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup.
The U16 male team captured the Challenge Cup last year and is looking to repeat Oct. 19-23 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
“We are incredibly pleased to see our roster announced today,” said head coach Bram Stephen. “The 20 young men we have selected are deep in skill and character, and our coaching staff is excited to start working with the athletes and help Team Alberta become a strong cohesive unit.”
The Challenge Cup features the highest-rated under-16 kids from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The Western Hockey League has a long history of selecting kids that play in this tournament.
The Kootenay Ice took Krebs first overall during last year’s bantam draft.
The U18 National Women’s Championship runs Nov. 9-13 in Regina, Sask.
Team Alberta is looking to improve on their eighth-place finish last year.
Jacobs is a defenseman for the Edge Hockey School this year.
“As a staff, we are incredibly excited about the team we’ve been able to assemble,” said head coach Carla MacLeod. “It’s a group that is willing to earn their opportunities, and we’re all looking forward to representing Alberta with pride next month.”
Prior to the Nationals, Team Alberta will play an exhibition game in Calgary on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. against the Bantam AAA Calgary Flames at the Kyle Stuart Arena.
The National Championship event brings together the top U18 female players from across Canada in an eight-team tournament, featuring teams from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario (red and blue), Quebec and the Atlantic provinces.
