The rinks and locker rooms were quiet in the Wheatland AA headquarters this weekend.
The peewee Braves and bantam Warriors have their rosters set and eagerly await season openers.
The midget Chiefs were also dormant following a week of training camp and their White and Red exhibition game Friday night. This year, White edged Red 4-1 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
“The game was intense, more intense than it has been in years past,” said Chiefs assistant coach Matt Gass. “These kids haven’t really played together much so it was a chance for them to show of what they can do and they all tried really hard.”
“We got a strong looking team and we are pretty excited,” added Chiefs head coach Evan Barlow. “We got quite a few returnees up front and some guys from the Bisons and M15.”
This week, the Chiefs practice twice and will trim their roster prior to the weekend’s Taber Invitational tournament.
The Chiefs head to Taber Sept. 23. Barlow and his crew plan on bringing a couple extra players at each position to help decide on final cuts.
Joining them in Taber will be the Taber Golden Suns, Okotoks Oilers, Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Foothills Bisons.
The Chiefs first regular season game is set for Friday, Sept. 30 against the Olds Grizzlys at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The Warriors open their regular season on the road at Murray Arena when they take on the Okotoks Oilers on Sept. 23. The Warriors will host their home opener on Sept. 25 (4:15 p.m.).
Head coach Cody Brown is still a few weeks away from naming captains and plans to rotate goalies for the entire regular season.
The Braves open their season at home on Sept. 23 when they welcome the Olds Grizzlys. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
