Growing interest in disc golf

The Strathmore Assembly of Youth (SAY) officially passed on the care of the Strathmore Disc Golf Course to Matt Byma, who is now in charge of the disc golf league as well as putting on tournaments in the hopes of growing the sport into a club.
In an effort to promote the sport, Byma and the league are hosting the EmBee Open Disc Golf Tournament this Friday, July 1. The tournament features two rounds of disc golf and players receive one free customized disc.
“This tournament is basically for the continuation of the league,” said Byma. “We’re hoping to raise some money for the league night prizes and the upkeep of the course.”
The league runs every second Thursday night and it is currently free to participate. Byma is hoping to keep it that way but it all depends on how well the tournament goes. He said he’s received quite a bit of interest in the tournament, both locally and from the surrounding areas.
Byma began playing disc golf last year when a friend told him to give it a try, and he quickly grew to love the game. He believes the disc golf course is a good thing for the town and decided to take over the care of it when he heard SAY was moving on to other projects.
He jumped at the opportunity to grow and expand from what they have now. He has already extended league nights from the first Thursday of every month to every second Thursday.
Byma said league nights are popular, especially for a young club, with about 30 players of all ages and abilities ready to play.
