The Strathmore Reds Midget AA baseball team had a good start to their season after making it into Division 1 South.
The team is currently vying for a spot in either Tier I or Tier II, which they will find out in June after they play teams in Red Deer.
“We had a great first two rounds,” said Reds coach Willie Mulligan. “We pulled out with a record 4-2, which is awesome as it has put us in a good place.”
The team played a series of four games over the weekend of May 28-29, finishing with a 3-1 record.
The team will soon move on to provincials, which take place at the end of the season on the last weekend of July.
If they make Tier I they have chance to win the event and move on to the Western Canadian Championships to take on teams in Western Canada.
Mulligan is proud of the team and said that while the practices have been up and down, the players have stuck it out for the long haul.
The team has a number of good players who double as leaders on the team. Jayse Wilson, who is a returning player and one of the over-age players, was a short stop for Thompson River University this year in Kamloops.
“He is our stud, he is our best all around baseball player,” said Mulligan. “He is great on the field and off the field as leader. He is the guy who I hope all the guys will look up too.”
However, Mulligan said that after the tournament over the weekend all of the players really stepped up and played well.
