The Strathmore Assembly of Youth (SAY) will soon host their last foray into disc golf in the hopes of drawing more attention to the sport and raising a greater interest in the community.
The Trilogy Challenge Disc Golf Tournament, which will take place on May 14 at the Strathmore Disc Golf course, requires all players of varying skill levels to use three different types of supplied discs to compete.
“If they have never played before we would love for them to come out and see how it is,” said Jill McDonald, teacher advisor for SAY. “If they are experienced, we would love to have them too because we have categories for them as well. But we really hope to encourage new people to come to the sport.”
In order to ensure increased participation, SAY will provide the three discs upon payment of the entry fee of $20, which McDonald calls a steal as it is equal to the cost of one disc. The event is based on how well the participants can use the discs as well as showcasing their overall abilities. It will also mean that those interested won’t need to bring their own discs to enter.
“It is going to be really fun,” said Jonathan Moore, a SAY member. “Quite a few members of SAY are going to be there playing and it will be good experience to go out and have fun.”
The course, which opened on Canada Day 2015, was the brainchild of SAY who designed and built it. The course cost $20,000 to build. They had a number of volunteers and sponsors who donated their time or money to get the course functional.
Tee off is scheduled to start at around 9:30 a.m. Beginners will play the course once, which roughly takes about one to two hours, before enjoying a lunch, paid for by their entrance fee. Prizes will be handed out to the beginners with the highest scores.
The intermediate and advanced players will play two rounds of the course, the first in the morning and the second one after lunch. Their scores will be cumulative of both rounds.
After this event SAY will be done with Disc Golf and will be moving on to another project to improve the town next year. However, McDonald said that a community group has embraced the sports and hopefully will take over promotion of the course.
The Trilogy Challenge Disc Golf Tournament will take place on May 14 starting 9 a.m., and will start at the first hole at Brentwood Elementary School. Entrance fee is $20.
