Strathmore Lacrosse’s fifth annual winter camp is underway, allowing returning players to come and warm up their skills for the upcoming season, and giving new players the opportunity to become comfortable with the game.
“It’s gives us a chance to get a stick in the kids’ hands,” said Scott Fargey, Strathmore Lacrosse president. “Instead of our evaluations being the first practices … now they’re coming in and they’re already warmed up. It’s a great opportunity for a lot of new kids to come out and play without being in an environment where they have no idea what’s going on in try-outs.”
Fargey said the focus is different between the younger groups in tykes and mini-tykes where many can’t catch or throw and need to be taught how to hold the stick properly, as well as throw the ball. In the older levels the focus is on body position and how to hold your stick to get a quicker release.
“We hope by the time all the kids are done here that they can throw and catch,” said Fargey. “I’ve coached bantam and peewee kids who try to run a practice and you’ve got one or two kids that can’t catch the ball. You can’t do a practice in lacrosse unless every kid on that team can catch and throw. We really focus on that.”
He added that the ideal goal is to get kids to play up the highest level of lacrosse they are capable of.
The camp is open all winter to players of all levels of lacrosse and is held every Saturday at Trinity Christian Academy free of charge.
