Strathmore RCMP received a surprise on Nov. 23, when they pulled over a speeding vehicle and in turn recovered several pounds of marijuana and a big wad of cash.
Authorities pulled over the Chevrolet Silverado at 8:40 p.m. when the driver sped through a 60 km/hr zone at speeds of 95 km/hr traveling east through Strathmore on HWY 1.
“Highway 1 is a major corridor through Alberta, any drugs that are going from B.C. to the rest of Canada, there are only a certain amount of routes they can travel,” said Sgt. Steve Vince with the Strathmore RCMP. “There’s certainly a lot of drugs going down the highway. Being able to find them is difficult. So this time one of our investigators with a keen nose was able to pull some off the streets.”
Upon interactions with the 53-year-old Saskatchewan driver, whose name has not yet been released, RCMP discovered 7.2 lbs of marijuana as well as more than $2,500 in cash – money that’s being classified as Proceeds of Crime and has been deposited to the government.
The driver was arrested for Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and is scheduled to appear in Strathmore Provincial Court on Jan. 5, 2016.
