Running Clubs from elementary schools in the county competed in the Fun Run hosted by Brentwood Elementary in a show of healthy competition and good-fashioned fun on June 11.
An estimated 250 elementary students took part in this year’s event that included students from Brentwood, Wheatland, Westmount, Carseland, Rockyford and Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy
“We decided three years ago to host an event in June for all the schools in the county,” said Ben Sader, who is a member of the Brentwood Run Club and a parent.
“The reason we did this was very obvious for the kids to have fun and keep fit.”
The event was the brainchild of the Brentwood Run Club, which was started three years ago and has students from Grade 3 to Grade 6 participating. The club has grown to 80 runners who compete in the club in the spring and fall.
The first year the run was held it saw 150 runners, and about 175 the second year. The runners trained this spring to either compete in the 2 km or the 4 km races, which went from the Brentwood Elementary grounds to Gray’s Lake.
Upon completion of the run, competitors got a medal and received food and beverages to keep them hydrated in the scorching mid-day heat.
