The Holy Cross Collegiate Junior-A Hawk boys and girls basketball teams both were successful in the Crowther Memorial Junior High’s February Frenzy tournament on Feb. 27 and 28.
Boys coach Troy Filipionek liked what he saw from his team during the whole tournament.
“We played very well. We won the consolation and showed a lot of resiliency and character especially in the last game coming back from a 10 point deficit early in the game,” said Filipionik. “Our strengths were definitely our speed and determination. We never give up and play hard right until the final buzzer.”
Filipionik would like his team to control and set the tone in more games.
“It seems we don’t get our game going until we see what our opponents are going play like. I would like for us to set the pace right from the start,” he said.
The boys’ ability to surpass the coach’s expectations has been what has impressed Filipionik the most.
“We went in feeling like this would be a rebuilding season but we have had so many guys improve so quickly that we have had a lot of fun and success,” said Filipionik.
“We never get out-worked regardless of the outcome, which as a coach is all you can ask.”
He hopes that they can be at the top of their game when they go to zones.
The Girl Hawks were able to go 2-1 in their portion of the tournament and won the consolation game 39-20 over Three Hills.
