SHS band supremacy

Strathmore High School is holding their first ever Battle of the Bands competition on Nov. 14 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the high school theater.
“We can have an a cappella group of two or three, but we’re looking for bands with instruments. It has to be at least one SHS student,” said Kaitrin McDonnell, event organizer. “On Nov. 14 from 7-10 p.m. is the Battle of the Bands, depending on how many bands there are, if we have a whole bunch it’ll be one or two (songs), if we only have five bands it’ll be two to three.”
McDonnell and her panel of judges will determine who will win the competition based on if they can make a musical sound and not just a noise.
“The determining (of winners) is whatever genre as long as they can make a musical sound instead of noise. We just want to bring music and want to raise some money for the music program,” said McDonnell. “So really if it’s a group that has been performing together longer than a week, they will probably be successful and be in the top three.”
McDonnell is hoping for one specific band to show up to showcase their talent.
“So we’re hoping for that five piece band, (with) one progressive metal band hopefully coming. They have a bass guitar, lead vocals with the guitar and drum kit plus they have a pianist as well,” said McDonnell.
The idea for the event is to have some of the community musicians and SHS’s band class come out and play what they’re practicing in class.
“So we’re hopefully going to have a group of teachers that are going to come and play, we have a student band, a father/daughter group and our Glee singers, there are a couple girls from there. Then we have our transitions class that is going to do a segment of Musical Therapy,” said McDonnell.
The admission is free for the bands but $5 at the door for guests, and the proceeds go to the SHS music program.
