Lucky Spartans

The Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartans were very fortunate to defeat Foothills Composite High School 2-1 on May 14, boy’s coach Kaitrin McDonnell said.
“It was a very close game. Both teams got very lucky around the net. We played our hearts out; I think everyone was a little tired on both teams,” McDonnell said. “They played their best given injuries.”
McDonnell is hoping for a little more luck for one of her players, who was injured during a school rugby game, and is likely out for the foreseeable future.
“A lot of our players play multiple sports. Now he’s not playing for either of our teams, which is a huge loss to both teams at the school. We’re waiting to hear back his progress report this week,” McDonnell said. “I have a funny feeling he won’t be back even into next week.”
The Foothills team was very tall, McDonnell mentioned, causing many of their headers to overshoot the net.
“We got very lucky in our defensive end that they didn’t capitalize on a lot of their opportunities – but it was the same thing down at their end too. We had a lot of really good breakaways, that were just so close,” McDonnell said. ““Our goalies definitely stood their ground, which was really good. Their goalie was standing on his head too.”
McDonnell used both her first-string and second-string goalies – one in each half. This is something she hopes to continue into the season, hoping the second-string will be SHS’ starter in coming years.
“I want to get the 14-year-old in there as much as I can this year. Since a lot of our players are in Grade 12, it’s important,” she said.
SHS has their next game away in Canmore on May 26, followed by a visit from Holy Trinity Academy on May 28 (to be played at the Ranch Field). Everyone is invited to attend the Spartans’ June 2 game at home against Notre Dame, as the school’s spirit team will be cheering the boys on.
