Strathmore’s Hayley Davis, 17, a cadet in the 903 Strathmore RCAC Squadron, has travelled to Penhold, Alta. this summer for a special program. She is making music in the Advanced Musicians Course at the Penhold Air Cadet Summer Training Centre (PACSTC).
For two and a half years Davis has been a part of the cadet program and she is excited about the program now and for the future.
“To me, being a cadet means adventure, a way to find a career that I can be proud of,” says Davis.
The course, which lasts six weeks, trains cadets in whichever instrument they choose. Davis will spend time one-on-one with military band personnel and professional musicians in order to build on the musical skills she already has.
This summer program not only promotes a deeper knowledge in music, but also promotes the development of leadership skills, citizenship and physical fitness, all while making lasting friendships. The cadets will live in the centre that can house up to 800 students at a time.
“Penhold offers dynamic and challenging training opportunities for the young men and women, like Cadet Davis, who are enrolled in the cadet program,” said Lieutenant Colonel Allen Dengis, Commanding Officer of PACSTC in a press release, “What they learn here is preparing them for adulthood and to be good citizens. The officers of the Cadet Instructors Cadre, members of the regular forces, primary reserve and civilian staff employed here engage with the cadets in a learning environment that is safe and fun.”
