Instead of focusing on readin’, writin’ and ‘rithmatic, teaching staff of Standard, Rockyford and Hussar Schools spent their recent Professional Development Day getting their certification in Standard First Aid on May 10.
“We are supposed to have a certain number of people in the school at any given time who can operate the defibrillation equipment,” said Karen Smith, principal of all three schools. “That being the case, after some discussion, the staff decided it would be a worthwhile PD activity for all of them to be certified in first aid.”
Dr. Sameea Qureshi and Randy Johnson from Wheatland EMS co-taught the day-long class, in which the teachers earned a three-year certification in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), AED (Automatic External Defibrillation) and Standard First Aid.
While the certification is standard, as the class consisted entirely of teachers, it allowed them to focus more on those situations that they might encounter in the classroom and playground.
“This will help the teachers better handle situations such as asthma, allergic reactions and shock management,” said Qureshi.
