DOUGAN, Ron

DOUGAN,Ron

June 30, 1942 – January 14, 2025

RONALD HENRY CLARENCE DOUGAN was born in Calgary to Donald & May Dougan.  He was raised on the family farm outside of Strathmore, AB along with his two brothers, Bryce & Harvey.  Left to mourn his loss are his daughters Jana (Conrad), Heather (Stephen) and Alexandra, stepsons Kirk and Tristan, his brother Bryce, grandsons Bodhi and Cedar, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.  He was predeceased by both parents and his brother Harvey.

At the age of 10, Ron was stricken with polio as so many other children were at that time.  It was an event that was to dominate his life from then on. Spending a year of recovery in the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary and having to face several surgeries on his legs helped him to develop the persistence and resilience that marked his whole life.  Following in his mother’s footsteps, Ron became a teacher with a focus on Mathematics.  Many students remember him as a gentle, patient teacher who took the time to help them understand difficult concepts.  After a year of working in the UK and travelling throughout Europe with his wife Maggie, he came to Canmore in 1972 to teach high school and retired in 1997. Even more than teaching, being a Dad was one of the highlights of his life.  Ron took great pride in his daughters and was always there for them. Unfortunately, post-polio syndrome became a reality later in life and brought on pain and mobility issues.

Ron spent the last few years of his life in the Sagewood Care Home in Strathmore, AB close to family and old friends. He passed away quietly in his sleep on January 14.

A private Celebration of Life for Ron is planned.

In remembrance of Ron, donations can be made in his name to marchofdimes.ca.
