Things started to look a lot fuzzier and hairier in every community across the nation as men grew their moustaches to raise funds for the awareness of Prostate Cancer.
During the month of November each year, the movement called Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With attempts at growing moustaches, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives.
Nov. 1, men and boys file their registration at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas.
Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.
Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.
At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valour by throwing their own Movember party and shaving off the fruits of their labours.
At Standard School a team of six students along with supervising teacher Mr. Mark McKeen grew (some more successfully than others) moustaches.
For one young man, Morgan Miller and his mom took things one step further in their fundraising. Sue Miller and Morgan (from Rosebud) made chocolate mustache lollipops to sell during the lunch hour at the school at $1.50 per moustache. Made in milk chocolate, white chocolate and chocolate/peppermint, the group raised just over $158 from fellow students and staff at the school on top of their funds raised in sponsorship for the event.
