Dr. Ted Morton was in Strathmore on Oct. 8 to speak on his new book Strong and Free: My Journey in Alberta Politics to a crowd of approximately 40 at the Canadian Legion.

The event was sponsored by Project Confederation, a group dedicated to working for a better deal for the west within Canada, by addressing issues such as equalization, health and social transfers, and federal policies regarding resource development for oil and gas, forestry and agriculture.

“The event was fantastic!,” said Josh Andrus, President of the Advisory Board and Executive Director at Project Confederation. “The crowd was very engaged and asked insightful questions during the Q&A – always a highlight of our gatherings.

“His [Morton’s] book serves as a reminder that power imbalances within confederation lead to division, and Alberta’s role will remain diminished until those imbalances are addressed. It’s also a call to action for the next generation of Alberta leaders to build on these foundations and achieve great things for the province.”

Morton, is professor emeritus of Political Science at the University of Calgary, and also served as the MLA for Foothills-Rocky View from 2004-2012 which included terms as Minister of Sustainable Resources Development (2006-09), Minister of Finance (2010), Energy (2011-12).

He was also involved in federal politics, elected as one of two Senators-in-waiting in 1998 and was in 2001 Director of Policy and Research for the Office of the Official Opposition (Reform Alliance Party) in the House of Commons.
