GIBSON, Mary

GIBSON,Mary

It is with great sadness the family of Mary Gibson (nee Solley) announces her passing on Saturday, April 1, 2023, in Strathmore, Alberta, Canada at the age of 79 years.

She was born on October 15, 1943, in the Salutation Inn in Dumfries, Scotland. She was the youngest of 6 children of David & Mary Solley (nee Clark). She grew up in Dumfries and moved to Crawston Farm near Dunscore where she and her close cousins Jackie, June and Coral got into lots of mischief. We enjoyed hearing those fun and entertaining stories including her nickname “custard Mary”. She later moved with her family back to Dumfries where they owned and operated the Waverley Hotel for many years. She met her husband John when they were teenagers and they married on July 22, 1971, and moved to Lochmaben, Scotland to raise their 4 children. On July 10, 1988, the Gibson family immigrated to Canada, spending a couple years in Lethbridge before finally settling in Strathmore in 1990, where Mary loved nothing more than being a grandma, drinking a good cuppa tea, gardening, golfing, and she still enjoyed a bowl of custard.

She was predeceased by her loving husband John Gibson, parents David & Mary Solley and older brothers David, Joseph, George, and Frank.

She is survived and will be lovingly remembered by her children Dawn (Joachim), John (Renee), Moira (Sean), Andrew (Amanda) and grandchildren Ffyona, Isla, Mira, Iris, Emily, Sadie, Addison, Ryleigh, Charlotte and bonus grandchildren Hailey, Jansen, and Casey. She leaves behind her sister Irene and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins back home in Scotland. She will also be dearly missed by her special friends Donna & Ed, Karina & Andrew, Tammy, Heather, and Deanna.

Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service on Friday, April 28, 2023, at Lord of All Lutheran Church (Strathmore) at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Strathmore Cemetery and light refreshments at the church.

Family flowers only. A small interment will also be held at the family plot in Troqueer Parish Church cemetery in Dumfries, Scotland at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Canada in Mary’s name.

The family would like to thank the staff at AgeCare Sagewood and Dr. Young for their wonderful care and compassion.
