McKay,Betty Mary
July 19, 1920 – November 11, 2022
Our Mum slipped away peacefully at home with family by her side on Friday, the 11th of November at the age of 102 years. She was a loving wife, a dearly loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a loyal friend. She had a determined spirit, loved God and remained proudly independent until the end.
Betty was born and raised in Leicester, England. As a young woman, she served in The Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAFs) during WWII, and a highlight was performing in the women’s marching band as a drummer in victory parades across Europe. She met and married Frank McKay in England and subsequently, became one of the thousands of war brides who arrived in Alberta in 1946. Betty and Frank were a devoted couple and worked hard to make a better life. Betty retired as the Post Master after enjoying many years at the post office in Strathmore and then, a happy retirement travelling and as snowbirds to Mesa, AZ.
Betty is survived by her three daughters and their families, Bev (Clive) Overton of Parksville, BC, Laura (George) Matheson of Strathmore and Heather Rose (Randy Hooser) of Osoyoos, BC., five grandchildren, Scott Matheson, Kim (Rene) McBride, Andrea Matheson of Calgary, Janine (Keith) King of Newmarket, ON and Greg Johnson (Jen Andrews) of Kimberley, BC and four great granddaughters, Olivia and Lauren Lefevre of Calgary and Julia and Keira King of Newmarket, ON.
She is predeceased by her husband, Frank, in November 2017.
The family are thankful for the loving care she received from Laura and George over the past couple of months after a devastating fall in July.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #10 Poppy Fund (Box 2041, Strathmore, AB T1P 1K1.
A Celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022 at 11:00 am at Lord of All Lutheran Church in Strathmore, Alberta
