Statement on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

By Leela Sharon Aheer Chestermere-Strathmore MLA

It is with great sadness and sincerest condolences to His Majesty the King and the entire Royal Family that we observe the passing of our Sovereign, Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada.

For the vast majority of us, Her Majesty is the only Sovereign we have ever known – a model of decorum and decency that served as a stabilizing force to the Commonwealth and the world for more than 70 years.

From Her Majesty’s inspirational service in World War II to her engagement and support of more than 600 charitable causes across Canada and her role as Regimental Colonel for 14 Canadian Regiments, including the Calgary Highlanders, The King’s Own Calgary Regiment, and the Royal Canadian Air Force, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been a beacon to Canadians and the centre of our institutions.

Her Majesty visited Alberta a number of times over her more than 70 years as our Sovereign and many Albertans fondly remember those visits in 1985, 1987, 1992, and 2005 and the many visits at the beginning of her reign.

We want to express our sincerest condolences to His Majesty the King, the entire Royal Family, and all Canadians who grieve the passing of our beloved Sovereign. God Save the King.
