Learning the ropes

The Holy Cross Collegiate rugby team may not be involved with a league, but that doesn’t mean they can’t head to the pitch to show the skills they have learned. There are 14 boys being taught the spot through a developmental program by Dale Glydon.
On May 17 the boys played their second exhibition game against Westmount Charter.
“It was a very physical game, very high tempo. I thought we were dominating in the rucks and mauls,” said Glydon.
“The experience and size of the Westmount back field initially allowed them to control the game but as the boys gained confidence the flow of the game evened out and we were able to pull to within one point only to run out of time.  I thought it was a very competitive game and we were so thankful for Westmount to travel out to Strathmore for the game.
“They are a fine group of athletes and have caught on amazingly well in a very short period of time. I am very proud of them.”
The boys were down by two unconverted tries very early but fought back to only lose 25 – 24. Glydon said school trustee Harry Salm has been a tremendous asset assisting with coaching.
