Volunteers grab your gloves and rubber boots! Strathmore Communities in Bloom is asking members from the community to come help tidy up Gray Park on May 25, at 7 p.m.
“People who have used the park have left their trash, and people going along the highway throw trash out their windows and it collects in the park. We hope people from the community who use the park will want to come there to help keep it clean,” said Robert Breitwieser, member of Strathmore Communities in Bloom.
Communities in Bloom (CIB) is a Canadian, non profit organization that promotes environmental beautification and civic pride in communities throughout Canada. Municipalities can take part in friendly, competitive categories or non-evaluated categories as well.
Strathmore has been involved with Communities in Bloom for six years, and has chosen the friendly, non-evaluated category for 2012. The reason is that the Strathmore CIB already has many projects in the works, including developing a design and concept in front of the Civic Centre, Family Centre and in front of the Strathmore Agricultural Society grounds.
“To do the evaluated categories, there is a lot of work, a lot of planning, a lot of writing and, preparation of documents, so it’s very time consuming. We felt we wanted to spend our time this year on doing the projects that we’re already developing,” said Breitwieser.
Even though a part of the non-evaluative category, Breitwieser said the committee is trying to promote all aspects of Communities in Bloom.
“We just want to invite everyone to come out to help make our town beautiful, and perhaps people will get the incentive throughout the community to take on a park or area and help make it beautiful,” said Breitwieser.
