Rockyford Lions Celebrate 75th anniversary three years later than planned

The Rockyford Lions Club was finally able to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the club, hosting an event to mark the occasion on March 19.
“It’s a big deal, it’s good that we’re able to put on the event finally for it and recognize all the past Lions members,” said club president, Devon Kathol.
He added that just over 200 people had registered for a plate at the event, which had finally been allowed to run several years after the genuine anniversary.
“This is the third time we’ve tried (to hold) it. Our club is actually 78 years old now. We tried to do it right at the beginning of COVID-19 when it hit and we had to postpone,” explained Kathol. “We tried to organize it last year as well and when the government put lockdowns on again, we had to postpone it again … we’ve had a lot of time to plan it.”
The Rockyford Lions Club, similar to its counterparts in other municipalities, regularly works to raise money for its community and give back wherever they can.
Kathol added the Rockyford team puts in a great deal of work every year into maintaining the local community hall, ag society, rodeo grounds, campground and arena.
“It’s a big deal, it’s good that we’re able to put on the event finally for it and recognize all the past Lions members,” said Kathol. “It (was) nice for everybody to get out again and visit and reflect on the past and the community.”
As for projects that will be taking place going forward, Kathol has some big plans for the community, particularly during the rodeo season.
“This year for our rodeo, we’re going to do a pro rodeo, which is our first ever time doing a pro rodeo,” he said. “That’s exciting, so we’ll see how that goes. Hopefully we get a good turnout for that.”
The Rockyford Rodeo, hosted by the Rockyford Lioins Club, will return with pro rodeo action on July 22-24. A Bullarama will also return on June 30.
