Strathmore swimmer recruited to UNB
The University of New Brunswick (UNB) men’s swimming team is adding Josh Kennedy of Strathmore to its recruiting class of 2021.
The 17-year-old Kennedy has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the UNB REDS ahead of the 2021-22 Atlantic University Sport season.
A current member of the Strathmore Silver Sharks Swim Club, Kennedy specializes in breaststroke and freestyle sprint distances.
“I’m looking forward to working with Josh and seeing his potential unfold,” said REDS head coach Marta Belsh. “He’ll help the team fill a bit of a void in racing breaststroke sprints and relay events.”
Kennedy qualified for the 2020 southern Alberta short course championships, but the event was cancelled just hours before his first race, due to the pandemic.
“I’m dedicated and I’m a hard worker,” said Kennedy, in a news release from UNB. “I push myself continuously to improve as an athlete and as a teammate. I’ll support my teammates in practice and competition, whenever and wherever.”
Kennedy is completing his Grade 12 year at Strathmore High School.
“A short-term goal of mine is to develop my backstroke skills and become competitive,” he said. “Long term, I’d like to think I can be making podium finishes at the AUS Championships.”
Kennedy will study civil engineering while attending UNB.
