SKIBSTED, David Merritt
August 22, 1954 – April 19, 2020
David was born in Calgary to Eric and Norma Skibsted and raised on the family farm SE of Rosebud. Early in life his preference for thrills and motorbikes over drills and tractors steered him from rural roots to urban pursuits. To this end, David’s mischievous and independent character served him well.
After graduating from Standard High School, David left home and began adventuring. His few years of employment at the Swan Hills gas plant earned him a brand new AMC Javelin. From here he moved out to Nanaimo BC and became a bill collector. But this line of work did not suit David’s positive personality, so he returned to Calgary where he excelled at selling Real Estate. This was the time when he met the
love of his life and her 3 children. David cherished Pia and they were married in 1988. He took on this new role with unselfish devotion, blessing their children with his time, patience, and ultimately, with his name.
David’s engaging personality promoted him in sales and customer relations jobs. After leaving Robert’s Real Estate, he moved on as assistant manager at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Then in the early 90’s David began work with his dad, where his writing and business skills were instrumental in patenting and marketing “The Retriever”. He and Pia spent several years travelling the States to promote The Retriever and eventually settled in Mesquite Nevada to enjoy their chill lifestyle; including darts, gambling, movies and entertaining family and friends passing through. It is here where David and Pia found true peace and contentment. And it is here where David suddenly passed away on April 19, 2020.
David had a passion for playing games, he found joy touring on his big bikes, and he developed a sharp business acumen. But without a doubt, David will be remembered mostly for his incredible sense of humour. No one could tell a story or deliver a joke like David; his facial expressions and body language were bang on. He brought hilarious laughter to everyone he met. David’s sincerity and non-judgemental character secured enduring relationships and respect. For all of this, David’s company was truly treasured and will be very deeply missed.
David was predeceased by his father Eric Skibsted. He is survived by his 2 leading ladies, wife Pia and mother Norma. David is mourned by his family of 3 children; Ken (Kristy) Skibsted of Calgary, Niki Skibsted of Calgary, Viki (Keir)Taylor of Fort McMurray, 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. As well David leaves behind 5 siblings; brothers Ricky (Linda), Mark (Sherri) and Kenny (Lori) and sisters Joanne (Roy Kenworthy) Skibsted, and Karen (Perry) McMillan; and all the nephews and nieces who adored him.
