Penn West has a corporate culture that embraces western culture and heritage. They have long history of being part of local, rural rodeos and western events, and are also very proud of their partnership with the Calgary Stampede and Indian Village.
On Thursday night at the Strathmore Heritage Days Rodeo Nicole Collard (Public Affairs Rep.) for Penn West welcomed 25-30 participants and families from the PREP Program as guests to the Backstretch Club for a light supper and seats to watch the Rodeo and Chuckwagons. On behalf of the Penn West Exploration company she then presented UT Sundararaj (Vice President of the Prep Program out of Calgary) with a cheque of $10,000 to further their programming. The kids were excited to get the cheque (but really excited to have their picture taken).
The PREP Program is a resource centre dedicated to the inclusion of individuals with Down’s syndrome in home, school and community life. They are a registered, non-profit organization for parents, families and friends of people with Down syndrome. Founded in 1988 by a registered SLP, The PREP Program now provides a wide variety of services and resources in individuals with Down syndrome in the Calgary area and around the world.
Parents of the children who have participated in the program are most thankful for the resources and supportive interaction it has brought to their families. The Program founded in 1988 by Speech Therapist Barb Tien was geared to helping children with Down’s syndrome with speech. The program has evolved and progressed into providing practical resources in social, health and educational aspects for daily living. The program offers support at different levels as the children grow up into early adulthood. Many of the participants and their families have made lifelong friendships and have created their own support network out of their experiences.
