Hawks take second at home tournament

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks senior boys’ basketball team made it back to the finals of their home tournament again this year, but came up short, losing 85-65 to St. Joseph’s Collegiate Crusaders from Brooks on Dec. 14.
“I was much happier with our effort against St. Joe’s this weekend,” said Hawks’ coach Joshua Jalbert. The previous weekend the Hawks faced off against the Crusaders in Brooks losing 95-53.
“We were more successful with handling their pressure and moving the ball around,” said Jalbert. “We struggled the most with giving up dribble penetration but were able to stop that in the second half.”
The Hawks were also hampered by illness and injury in the final game, with three players sitting out and another who struggled with a hand injury.
The Hawks made it to the finals by defeating Prairie Christian Academy from Three Hills 89-69 on Friday afternoon then downing the Bassano Broncos 86-76 on Saturday morning.
“In our other games the boys played with poise and were in control of each game,” said Jalbert. “There were still times where our defense would break down, but overall I was very happy with how they played this weekend.”
Jalbert is hoping the Hawks will face off against St. Joe’s again before zones later in the season.
“The more we play them, the better it is for us.”
