Students honoured at SHS

Strathmore High School held its semi-annual Breakfast of Champions on Nov. 29, and 44 students were honoured by their teachers and the whole school.
Breakfast of Champions is held twice a school year to recognize students “who are our ‘quiet contributors’ and therefore may not be recognized otherwise,” noted Kevin Mertz, associate principal at Strathmore High School (SHS).
“A student that is a champion is often an ‘unsung hero’ of our school. It might be someone that makes a positive contribution in class or in the hallways, or someone who has made a real effort to change their attitude or work ethic, and the effort has paid off,” he added. “It might be a student who quietly goes about their studies and achieves their goals without getting any major recognition. A champion is someone that we are proud to say is a true Spartan.”
Each of the school’s 44 teachers choose a champion and they all come together at 7 a.m. twice a year for breakfast and a presentation where each teacher introduces and shares the student’s success story.
This is the 25th year for SHS’s Breakfast of Champions event. Twenty-five years ago, now-retired Karen Harris had visited another school that ran the program.
“She came back to SHS and explained it to staff who jumped on board with it,” said Mertz. “We are very grateful for Neil Kennedy, owner of our local Sobeys, for supporting this program over the years by donating the breakfast and attending many of the events as well. This is a great community partnership that we are thankful for.”
