1928 – 2019
Benita Bergquist (McGowan) passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on September 5, 2019 at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her husband Ole; son Danny (Boone); sister Sheila; and her parents Tom and Edith. She is survived by her children Lonnie, Tommy, Bonnie (Brad), Jo-Anne (Al), and Linda; ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Benita was born April 16, 1928 in Calgary, Alberta. Eldest daughter of Tom and Edith McGowan, she lived all her life in the Standard/Rosebud area where she met her husband, Ole, and married in 1947. After raising six children, Benita finally got a paper route for the Calgary Herald. She was a life member of the Standard Ladies Auxiliary and helped with numerous functions over the years. This is where she showed off her excellent cooking skills.
Benita enjoyed playing cribbage, crazy rummy, and her scratch tickets, especially the crosswords. She enjoyed talking with people even if she was unfamiliar with them. She loved having her family and friends visit. Benita was also an avid Blue Jays fan and never missed a game of curling on TV. She will be forever remembered by her family and friends as a loving and caring lady. We love you Mom, till we meet again.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Sader and staff at the Strathmore Hospital for their compassion and care in Benita’s final days.
A Celebration of Benita’s Life will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Nazareth Lutheran Church (Standard) at 1:00 p.m. Coffee to follow in the Standard Community Hall.
