Visual artists are invited to gather in Rosebud, Sept. 6 and 7, to celebrate the 18th annual Worldwide Paint Out event.
Around the world, member groups of International Plein Air Painters will gather for their own paint out events, in honour of painting outdoors. This is the first time the event will be celebrated in Rosebud.
“These artists encourage other artists to get out outside, paint with them, share their ideas and a love of nature and art,” said a press release from the Rosebud Paint Out organizers. “Artists of any kind including photographers are welcome to celebrate the beauty of the area.”
Visual artists in all kinds of media – oils, pastels, watercolours, sketching, photography – can register. On Sept. 6 and 7, they can set up anywhere in the hamlet of Rosebud to paint, draw or photograph.
Members of the public can also attend at no cost. Maps posted around the hamlet of Rosebud will indicate where each of the artists is working, and between 1 and 7 p.m. on Sept. 6, and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 7, guests can move from artist to artist, watching them work. Some artists may also have work for sale.
On Sept. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Rosebud Community Hall, the public is also invited to attend an informal exhibit of the work the artists have produced over the weekend.
Plein Air is a French expression meaning in the open air, and plein air painting became popular in France in the mid 19th century. It now often refers to any artwork created outdoors, using natural light.
“There is a joy about painting outdoors,” said Rosebud artist Valerie Speer, one of the event organizers. “This is a chance for people to see professional artists at work, developing their paintings in response to the beauty in nature.”
Artists who want to participate in Rosebud’s Paint Out can respond to the Plein Air Paint Out in Rosebud page on Facebook. They’ll then receive a registration form via email. There is no registration fee, although artists are invited to help cover the cost of renting the hall for the Saturday art show.
There’s no cost for members of the public who want to watch artists at work and visit the art exhibit.
Individuals and families who need accommodation may contact local bed and breakfasts or the High Eagle RV Park. Arbor Guest House is offering an artist rate. Some potluck meals are planned for the artists.
